Sandra Chiao, PhD (Dr. Sandy) is mindful in her approach to neuropsychological testing, making every attempt to ensure that her clients feel well-received and comfortable prior to the start of each evaluative session. Throughout the assessment process she incorporates short breaks and moments of levity to encourage positive behaviors, and drinks and snacks are always on hand. Her office is located in a lovely garden setting that lends itself to positive interactions and best performance.
With respect to testing, Dr. Sandy has found that there is an art to approaching and conducting a neuropsychological assessment. Almost anyone can be taught to administer tests and look at scores; the art is in the observation, approach, and ability of the examiner to ask the right questions, make vital connections, and integrate/synthesize the data collected within the context of the client’s history. Additionally, while standardized scores are black and white, an individual’s approach to thinking about and answering questions ‘in the moment’ is fluid, and dependent upon a number of variables (e.g. quality of attention, level of stress/anxiety, environmental factors, time management, organization). Indeed, recognizing nuances, and incorporating subtle details in interpreting the data, makes the difference between a ‘boiler plate’ assessment, and one that deeply, and comprehensively, reflects your child.
By the end of the evaluation, parents should absolutely feel that Dr. Sandy has understood their child, adequately explained their neurocognitive and learning profile, and brought them to a higher level of understanding of their child’s individual strengths and challenges (i.e. how they learn and function best across situations), as well as provided them with tailored recommendations for future supportive interventions.
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Sandy is a pediatric neuropsychologist licensed in the state of California (PSY18595), with 25 years of expertise in understanding, assessing, and explaining the functional and developmental aspects of brain-behavior relationships, from a strength-based perspective. She specializes in conducting comprehensive neuropsychological, psychological, and psycho-educational evaluations of children, adolescents, and young adults.
Dr. Sandy provides assessment services in both English and Spanish. Her clients present with a broad range of developmental, educational, medical, psychological, psychiatric, and/or other complex social-emotional and behavioral challenges. Dr. Sandy strives for social, cultural, and linguistic competence in her evaluations, using an integrative, whole-person approach to identifying, and explaining, her clients' patterns of strengths and challenges, in order to recommend evidence-based interventions, and increase positive functional development in her clients.
On her days off, Dr. Sandy enjoys spending time with family/friends, playing tennis and pickleball, as well as long walks/hikes with her little dog, Bao.
